Is there Uber or Ola in Goa? Your cab options from Calangute

Uber and Ola aren't authorised in Goa. Here is what works from Calangute instead: GoaMiles, tourist taxis on the official tariff, pilots and buses.

In short

No. Uber and Ola are not authorised to operate in Goa. Book GoaMiles, the state-backed app taxi Goa Tourism recommends; a tourist taxi, fare agreed first; a licensed motorcycle 'pilot' for short solo trips; or a car through your hotel.

No. Uber and Ola are not authorised to operate in Goa, and the state government said in 2025 that they would not be allowed in. If you rely on them at home in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi, set up the local alternatives before you fly.

What works instead: GoaMiles, the state-backed taxi app; tourist taxis, which charge on an official tariff; licensed motorcycle taxis, known as pilots; auto-rickshaws and buses; and cars arranged by your hotel. Each suits a different kind of trip, and the fare rules differ between them.

Why Uber and Ola aren't allowed in Goa

Goa's taxi unions oppose app aggregators, arguing that they would take work from local drivers. When the state gazetted draft aggregator guidelines in May 2025, hundreds of drivers lodged formal objections, and in June that year Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said plainly that Ola and Uber were not coming to Goa. In August 2025 police at Mopa airport registered a case over a driver picking up passengers through the Uber app without a state permit, so don't rely on a car that happens to appear in the app.

In March 2026 Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho told the Legislative Assembly that only GoaMiles and a proposed Goa Taxi app would be authorised under a planned digital taxi system. In June he said the taxi issue would be taken up only after the next Assembly election. For the 2026–27 season, plan without Uber and Ola.

GoaMiles: set it up before you arrive

GoaMiles is the state-backed app taxi whose passenger guide Goa Tourism publishes, and Goa Tourism's travel advisory names it as a way to avoid being overcharged. It runs 24 hours a day, and you can choose a hatchback, a sedan or an SUV.

Download it and register before you travel: sign-up needs only a mobile number and a one-time password, which is easier at home than at an airport kerb. Booking ahead costs nothing extra, so schedule anything with a deadline, such as a flight, a train or a dinner reservation, instead of requesting a car at the last minute. Be ready at pick-up time, because waiting charges start after a five-minute courtesy wait.

Tourist taxis: agree the fare before you get in

Goa's traditional cabs are tourist taxis, which usually work from stands at hotels and beaches rather than cruising for passengers. Don't expect a running meter: Goa Tourism's own guide talks of hiring unmetered taxis, so settle the price before you set off, not at the end.

Fares are set by the State Transport Authority. New rates came into force on 25 September 2026, replacing the 2021 schedule and its four-hour and eight-hour packages with distance slabs: one charge for the first 3 km, another up to 8 km, then a rate per kilometre that rises with the size of the car. Travel between 11 PM and 5 AM costs 35% more. The authority has also announced QR codes in taxis that will show the notified fare, but has not given a start date, so ask the driver for the official rate and agree the total, including any waiting time or return leg.

For a whole day of sightseeing, hire a tourist taxi for the day or book one of GoaMiles' rental packages in the app, and agree the route, hours and total before you leave. Our guide to hiring a taxi for a day in North Goa covers what to settle first.

Pilots: Goa's motorcycle taxis

Goa's licensed motorcycle taxi riders are known as pilots. Each carries a single pillion passenger, usually at a fixed fare, and Goa Tourism notes that, after buses, pilots are the cheapest way to get around.

A pilot suits one person with no luggage on a short run, such as Calangute to Baga, about 4.5 km from the resort. In July 2026 the Chief Minister launched MajheApp Driver, through which you can book a licensed pilot from your phone at government-approved fares. Joining is voluntary for riders, so not every pilot is on it, and you may still need to find one at a stand.

Ride only with a licensed pilot: the state has said private bikes may not carry paying passengers, and that police will seize those that do. Wear a helmet, and take a cab instead at night or in heavy rain.

Auto-rickshaws and buses

Goa Tourism lists auto-rickshaws as an option in urban areas, so expect them mainly in towns such as Panaji and Mapusa. Prices vary, so agree the fare before you climb in.

Buses are the cheapest way to travel. Kadamba, the state transport corporation, runs routes from Calangute to Panaji and Mapusa, plus airport buses to Mopa and Dabolim, while private buses reach many more villages. They work best by day and with light bags. Services can change, so check timings on the day; our guide to Kadamba buses from Calangute has the route numbers.

Cars arranged by Ocean Palms Goa

If you are staying with us, our Front Desk is open 24 hours and can help with transport. The team can arrange chauffeur-driven and self-drive cars, scooters and motorcycles, and airport transfers in a four-seater air-conditioned car at ₹1,900 one way, with ₹500 extra between 6 PM and 8 AM. Sky Villa stays include airport pick-up and drop.

As with any driver, confirm the fare, the vehicle and the pick-up time when you book. You can reach the team through our contact page, and our location page gives the address to show a driver: opposite Holiday Street, Gauravaddo, Calangute.

Which ride suits which trip from Calangute

As a rule of thumb, walk what you can, use a pilot for short solo hops and pre-book anything with a deadline. Distances are from the resort, opposite Holiday Street in Gauravaddo.

  • The nearest beach, about 650 m down Holiday Street: on foot.
  • Calangute's main beach (about 2.5 km) or Baga (about 4.5 km): a pilot if you are alone, a GoaMiles cab or a tourist taxi for two or more.
  • Panaji (13 km) by day: the bus if you are travelling light, otherwise a cab.
  • Mopa (31 km) or Dabolim (38 km) airport: a pre-booked car through our team or GoaMiles; for night arrivals, see our guide to landing in Goa late at night.
  • A full day of sightseeing: a tourist taxi or a GoaMiles rental package, with the route and total agreed first.
  • Dinner in Baga or Candolim: a cab both ways, with the return booked before you sit down.

Late nights, receipts and complaints

Plan the ride home before you go out. Schedule a GoaMiles car, or agree the return with your driver, keep their number and confirm the fare, remembering that the official tariff adds 35% between 11 PM and 5 AM. If you have been drinking, don't drive or ride: Goa Tourism's advisory is plain on that.

Before you get in, check for a yellow number plate, which marks a vehicle registered to carry paying passengers. Goa Tourism warns never to hire unregistered private vehicles, cabs or bikes, and says you may attract a heavy penalty for doing so. Note the plate, ask for a receipt (GoaMiles keeps yours in the app under My Rides) and, if a dispute can't be settled, call Goa's 24-hour tourist helpline, 1364, or 112 in an emergency. Our guide to common tourist scams in Calangute and Baga covers the other traps worth knowing.

Questions guests ask

Can I use Rapido or another national bike-taxi app in Goa?

Don't count on it. Goa has not finalised rules for app aggregators, and the state has said only licensed pilots may carry paying passengers on two wheels. The local option is MajheApp Driver, launched in July 2026 for booking licensed pilots.

How should I get to the airport for an early-morning flight?

Book the day before. Our Front Desk can arrange a transfer, or you can schedule a GoaMiles cab, which runs around the clock. Mopa is 31 km from the resort and Dabolim 38 km, so check which airport is on your ticket and allow for the drive.

Can I pay for cabs by card or UPI?

GoaMiles takes payment through the app by credit card, net banking or e-wallet, so check its payment options when you register. For tourist taxis, pilots and auto-rickshaws, carry some cash in case the driver doesn't take digital payment, and settle the amount before you set off.

Can GoaMiles take me anywhere in Goa?

Goa Tourism says you can book a GoaMiles cab to any destination across the state. Cars may take longer to reach quieter villages, so schedule early starts and long trips in advance.
