Mopa or Dabolim: which Goa airport is better for Calangute?

How Goa's two airports compare for a stay in Calangute: distances, names and codes, which is busier, and the taxis, buses and transfers at each.

In short

Either works. Ocean Palms Goa in Calangute is about 31 km from Mopa (GOX) and 38 km from Dabolim (GOI), so choose on flight times and fares, then check the airport code on your ticket: airlines switch between them.

Search for flights to Goa and two airports usually come up: Manohar International at Mopa (GOX), in the state's far north, and Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco da Gama in the south. For a stay in Calangute the choice matters less than the map suggests. Ocean Palms Goa is about 31 km from Mopa and 38 km from Dabolim, a gap of just 7 km.

So book the flight whose timings and fare suit you best, and do not pay much more, or land at a much worse hour, to save those few kilometres. Two things deserve more attention: the airport code on your ticket, since airlines move between the two, and a plan for the last leg before you land.

Two airports, several names

Much of the confusion comes from the names. Tickets and booking sites may call one airport Mopa, Manohar International or simply Goa, and the other Dabolim, Goa International or, again, simply Goa. The three-letter code is the reliable check, so look for it on every booking.

  • GOX: Manohar International Airport, at Mopa in Pernem taluka, North Goa. It opened to commercial flights on 5 January 2023 and is run by GMR Goa International Airport Ltd.
  • GOI: Dabolim Airport, which the Airports Authority of India calls Goa International Airport, near Vasco da Gama in South Goa. The AAI runs it as a civil enclave inside INS Hansa, an Indian Navy air base.

How far is each airport from Calangute?

Measured from the resort in Gauravaddo, Calangute, Mopa is about 31 km away and Dabolim about 38 km. The two drives head in opposite directions. From Mopa you come south down the national highway past Mapusa; from Dabolim you cross the Zuari, pass Panaji and cross the Mandovi into Bardez before turning towards the coast.

Traffic and the time of day shape both journeys more than the 7 km difference does, so treat any journey time you are quoted as a rough guide. For a flight home, leave a generous margin from either airport, and more during the Christmas and New Year peak. Our location page has a map and the distances to both airports.

Which airport is busier?

Both are busy, working airports. In the year to March 2026, Dabolim handled about 6.1 million passengers and Mopa about 5.4 million, according to the Airports Authority of India. The direction of travel favours Mopa: its traffic grew by almost 16 per cent that year, while Dabolim's fell by a little over 15 per cent.

International traffic leans more clearly to the north. Mopa carried about 389,000 international passengers that year to Dabolim's 186,000 or so, roughly two to one. On many domestic routes you may find flights to both, so compare the two codes for the same date before you decide.

Check the airport code every time you book

Airlines do switch between the two. Qatar Airways announced in February 2024 that it was moving its Doha flights from Dabolim to Mopa. Aeroflot, which had been flying to Mopa, scheduled its Moscow service for the 2026-27 winter into Dabolim instead, from 3 October 2026. Domestic schedules shift too, so the airport you used last time is no guarantee of the next.

A few habits keep things simple. They take a minute and spare you a car waiting at the wrong airport.

  • Look for GOX or GOI on every leg of the booking, not just the outbound flight.
  • Recheck the airport whenever the airline emails a schedule change.
  • Give the code and flight number to whoever is collecting you, including us if we are arranging your car.

From Mopa: the taxi counter, app cabs and the airport bus

The airport's own taxi page lists Goa Taxi, a state-owned app with an authorised counter that charges fixed rates to destinations across Goa, and GoaMiles, the app taxi run as an initiative of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation. Use the official counter or an app booking rather than accepting offers in the arrivals area.

On a budget, Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTCL) runs route 324 from the airport to Calangute via Mapusa. In late October 2026 the airport's bus page listed six departures a day to Calangute, from morning into the evening, with a link to book seats online. Timings change, so check the page before you fly. The bus suits a daytime landing with light bags.

From Dabolim: the prepaid counter and GoaMiles

Outside the terminal there is a government-run prepaid taxi counter, and you can also book a GoaMiles cab. At a prepaid counter you pay for your destination before you leave, so the fare is settled before the journey starts.

KTCL also lists route 322 from Dabolim Airport to Calangute via Panaji. Its route list gives no timings, so check the current schedule before you count on it, and treat it as a daytime option.

Booking the last leg before you fly

The calmest arrival is a car arranged in advance. Our team can book an airport transfer for you at an extra charge: the published rate is ₹1,900 one way in an air-conditioned four-seater car, plus ₹500 between 6 PM and 8 AM. Send your flight number and arrival airport to reservations through our contact page when you book, and confirm the fare for your airport at the same time.

If you prefer to book yourself, GoaMiles says it runs 24 hours a day, takes advance bookings at no extra charge and includes airport parking in the fare. Goa Tourism's travel advisory recommends metered cabs or app taxis such as GoaMiles, and warns visitors never to hire unregistered private vehicles, which can bring a heavy penalty. If your flight lands after dark, read our guide to landing in Goa late at night, which covers the night options in detail.

When something else should decide it

A few trips do tip one way. If you are splitting the holiday with some nights in South Goa, Dabolim is far closer to the southern beaches, so it suits that end of the trip. If you plan to spend time around Morjim, Mandrem or Arambol, Mopa sits in the same northern taluka, Pernem.

If you are coming from Mumbai or down the Konkan coast, the train is a sensible alternative to flying at all, and our comparison of Thivim, Karmali and Madgaon stations explains which suits Calangute. For road trips and the rest of the journey, start with Getting here, the easy way.

Questions guests ask

Can I fly into Mopa and home from Dabolim, or the other way round?

Yes, as long as you check both codes and plan the drive to your departure airport separately. It can make sense when one airport has the better outbound flight and the other the better return.

Can I book an Uber or Ola at Goa's airports?

Do not count on it. Neither appears among the services on Mopa's official taxi page, so plan on the official counters, GoaMiles or a car booked ahead.

Can I land at either airport on an Indian e-Visa?

Yes. The Government of India lists both Goa (Dabolim) and Goa (Mopa) among the designated entry airports for e-Visa holders. Check the official e-Visa site before you fly, as the rules can change.

Is Dabolim closing now that Mopa is open?

No. Dabolim remains open as a civil airport run by the Airports Authority of India, with domestic and international flights. Both airports are in use, so let flight times and fares decide, and check the code before you book.

Does any room at Ocean Palms Goa include airport transfers?

Yes. A stay in the Sky Villa includes complimentary airport pick-up and drop, along with butler service and breakfast at any hour. For every other room, our team can arrange a transfer at an extra charge.
